Why you should donate to the Creek Kickstarter

I perform maybe a quarter of all of my NY stand up sets at The Creek.  Way more than on any other stage, I have learned how to be a comedian at The Creek.  No other full time comedy venue allows the freedom and the stage time together that this venue provides.

There’s are roughly 10 open mics a week on two stages.  There is a podcast network with roughly a dozen podcasts with tens of thousands of listeners. there are 20 independently produced comedy shows a week.  Stand Up, Sketch, Improv, Short Films, Plays, Music, and any other relevant kind of comedy that exists is showcased here.  If you look closely you can see The Creek in the background of dozens of comedy shorts made by people who know that whatever idea they can conceive, it can be realized within these walls.

I had a good year last year. Last year I was finally able to start making a living from comedy. I moved to NY 10 years ago to become a comedian and I think it took me a long time to recreate on stage what makes me funny offstage and I definitely credit my stage time at the Creek with finally being able to achieve that goal.  With the amount of stage time that the Creek has provided for me over the last few years I have been forced to create more material and hone my hosting and improvisational skills. Things are good now and maybe it would have happened without The Creek but it certainly would have taken longer. I’m 31.  How much fucking longer can I wait?! (Is something I screamed silently into my own ear for an entire decade)

The owner, Rebecca Trent is a supporter of comedians like I have never seen.  There may be bigger supporters of comedy but no one cares about the comedians like her.  Simply put if there is an idea in your head, Rebecca will give you the chance to put it on stage.  Between providing clothes for an audition, rides to a gig, meals for a hungry comic, she routinely goes out of her way both financially and with her time to provide whatever provisions comedians need. Hell I have spent Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Year’s at the Creek.  There are a lot of comics who can’t make it home on these days and the Creek provides a family for everyone to always feel at home.

Last year, the Creek was home to a half dozen of the Montreal Comedy Auditions, The SXSW auditions, industry showcases, and television auditions.  It’s been written about in Time Out NY, The New York Times, The Daily News, New York Magazine, The Huffington Post, and even mentioned on Conan.  The way that nearly a decade ago people realized the UCB was a place to find relevant, groundbreaking comedy is now happening at The Creek.

On Mark Maron’s WTF podcast Donald Glover credited Rebecca and The Creek and the Cave for why he started standup.  Recent drop ins have included Louis Ck, Colin Quinn, The Sklar Brothers, Judah Friedlander and more.  People like James Adomian, Sean Patton, Nick Vatterott and Murderfist count the Creek and The Cave as their home club.  As do I even though this theater isn’t actually a club.  More of a clubhouse.  So join us in building a scene and community that isn’t dependent on luring people to our shows with “discounted” tickets and sticking them with a two drink minimum.  The shows at The Creek are almost all free and when they are not, they are 5 dollars at most. (which includes a free beer.  I know.  That’s why we need the Kickstarter) So give a few bucks to keep the doors open at the most important Comedy Theater in NYC.

The Creek has everything it needs except a marquee out front signifying it as the comedy theater that it is and a little scratch to throw into advertising so the whole world know what exactly is happening behind those doors.  I’m so earnest!
